Nail head rusting
Reddish-brown stains or runs on the paint surface.
- Non-galvanized iron nails have begun to rust that bleeds through to the topcoat. The nail heads have not been treated with an anti-corrosive agent.
- Galvanized nail heads have begun to rust after sanding or excessive weathering. The nail heads have not been treated with an anti-corrosive agent.
SolutionUse galvanized nails whenever possible. When painting new exterior structures in which non-galvanized and galvanized nails have been used, prime the nail heads with Rostex anti-corrosive agent. Prime and paint with a suitable Tikkurila topcoat according to instructions.
When repainting exteriors where nail head rusting has occurred, wash off rust stains and sand the nail heads to remove all rust. Prime the nail heads with Rostex and paint with a suitable Tikkurila product according to instructions.
