Deep cracking and flaking

Problem - Deep cracking / flaking
The formation of deep cracks on the surface of the paint film while the paint is drying.

Possible causes

  • Spreading the paint too thickly, generally on porous surfaces.
  • Too much paint in the corners.
  • Humidity is too low, the temperature is too high, and the surface dries too fast.
  • The surface is warm.
  • The surface "lives" (expands and contracts)

Remove loose, flaked paint by scraping or with a stripping knife.

Clean the surface with Tikkurila Maalipesu (Cleaning Agent) according to instructions on the label, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry.

Sand the surface and remove the dust and residue.

Apply primer to the clean wooden surfaces. Finish with a suitable Tikkurila paint according to instructions.. NB! Use solvent-borne primers for lime and distemper paints and surfaces treated with spray-levelled plaster. See the product label for information on painting conditions.
