Instructions - Exterior wooden surfaces

Before treatment

  • Check the condition of the wood surface and repair any damage and structural defects.

  • Always read the instructions on the product label before use.

  • The surface must be dry before treatment. The surface to be painted, the paint and the air temperate must be at least +5°C and relative humidity below 80% during painting and drying.

  • Do not apply oil paint in the evening since night dew can cause the paint surface to dull.
Do not paint in direct sunshine.

  • Always choose tinted, semi-transparent wood finish because colourless wood finishes do not provide adequate UV protection.

  • Choose the same colour undercoat and topcoat.

  • Wash surfaces that have been attacked by mould with Homeenpoisto (Mould Removal) cleaning agent using a ratio of 1 part agent to 3 parts water. Brush the mould removal solution upwards. Let the solution take effect and brush off using plenty of water starting from the top downwards.

  • When you use a Mould Removal protect yourself and any surfaces not being painted from splashes.

  • It should be borne in mind that if using a semi-transparent wood finish, Mould Removal is a hypochlorite solution which bleaches the wood surface.

  • Prime any new boards or logs as soon as possible with Valtti Base.

If you are unable to complete surface treatment during the same summer, we recommend treating the wood surface twice with Valtti Base that has been tinted the colour of the wood. This will provide adequate protection against the impacts of moisture and wood rot, mould and blue stain and the sun's UV rays.

  • When treating wood surfaces with semi-transparent products, the final colour of the wood depends on the species, hardness and original colour of the wood and the number of times it has been treated. Make a small test application to ensure the final colour.

  • When applying semi-transparent products, always apply continuously in the direction of the grain for an even finish.

  • Ensure you have enough paint of the same batch number to paint a continuous surface to avoid colour differences.

During treatment

  • To prevent moisture from entering the wood through the ends and joints, apply both undercoat and topcoats to them thoroughly.
  • Remember that the true colour of the paint is not apparent until the paint is dry.
  • Stir products thoroughly both before and during application.

  • If you continue painting the following day, put the paint roller or brush in a plastic bag and seal tightly overnight.

After treatment

  • Check the condition of treated surfaces once a year and carry out any necessary maintenance in good time!

  • Wash dirt off surfaces treated with wood finish or paint in good condition with Huoltopesu (Maintenance Cleaner). Huoltopesu does not require any new treatment after cleaning.

  • If there is any paint or lacquer left over, put the lid carefully back on the can to form a tight fit. Turn the can upside down for a moment to make the lid airtight. Opened and/or tinted products cannot withstand prolonged storage.

  • Take liquid paint waste to a hazardous waste collection point. Empty or dry cans can be taken to a recycling point or to a public waste disposal site.
