Safety instructions on using Joker and Remontti-Ässä interior wall paint for allergic and hypersensitive consumers
How to paint safelyOne of the core aims at Tikkurila is to continuously improve the safety of paint products during product development, raw material selection, and paint manufacturing. Both matt Joker and semi-matt Remontti-Ässä paints are setting new standards for product safety and have surpassed the strictest M1 emission classification levels many times over. Joker and Remontti-Ässä also contain high-quality acrylate binding agents, which ensure excellent adhesion and durability. Remontti-Ässä is the first paint product to receive the seal of approval from the Finnish Allergy and Asthma Federation.
When using paint products, allergic and hypersensitive consumers should however always take precautions and follow the recommendations described below.
Painting is enjoyable and risk-free when you follow these instructions: Read the instructions on the package. Always ensure that there is sufficient air ventilation during painting and paint drying. Do not live in premises undergoing renovation. The use of good-quality painting tools is important for achieving a good finish and reusing the tools. They also help to reduce excessive paint splashing.
Protect yourselfBefore painting, cover floor space and other areas to prevent paint splashing. Use protective gloves to protect your hands from splashing and other unnecessary contact with paint. Like other water-borne paints, Joker and Remontti-Ässä contain preservatives that may induce allergic reactions in hypersensitive users. Wash any paint from your skin with soap and water.
Use protective glasses to prevent any risk of splashing and eye damage when painting roofs, for example. If paint is splashed into the eyes, thoroughly rinse them out at once with plenty of water.
When spray painting, always use a partial facemask equipped with at least gas and particle filters. Long-term inhalation of paint spray mist may irritate the respiratory organs. Use protective clothing and protect the eyes in particular. Spray mist may cause eye irritation and dry skin in hypersensitive users. If you are potentially allergic to paint components, apply the paint preferably with a brush or roller, and use a respirator if necessary.
Practical safety informationIn accordance with EU legislation, Tikkurila Product Safety has drawn up warning texts for paint product packaging labels, safety and use instructions for product specifications, and safety and use bulletins. These contain detailed information on potentially hazardous product components and their characteristics.
Joker and Remontti-Ässä paints contain water, binding agents, pigments, fillers, and additives. The amount of raw materials in each product depends on the base paint. White Type A base paint contains more titanium dioxide (white pigment) and fewer fillers (dolomite, talc) than Type C base paint, which the retailer uses to tint stronger colour shades.
Joker paint contains:
40-50 % water
11-24 % acrylic polymer
3-7% ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer
25-40 % titanium dioxide, dolomite, talc, styrene acrylic copolymer
Remontti-Ässä paint contains:
40-50 % water
20-30 % acrylic polymer
15-35 % titanium dioxide, dolomite, talc, styrene acrylic copolymer.
Both paints contain:
<1.5 % polyurethane resin, acrylic copolymer, sodium polyacrylate, polysiloxane, ethyl hydroxyethylcellulose
0.2 % 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol
<0.02 % 12 benzyl isothiazol 3(2H) one
<0.0015% 5-chlorine- 2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one/2 methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one
Tikkurila Symphony colourant contains:
35 65% colour pigments and fillers depending on the tint.
- for example, the ochre colour K396 at the bottom of the page was tinted from Remontti-Ässä using Symphony colourants, and contains the following components: carbon black PBk7, iron oxide yellow PY42, titanium dioxide PW6, talc, and kaolin.
Tikkurila Symphony colourant pigments do not contain any hazardous heavy metals.
25-50 % water (and vinyl acetate in four colourants)
1-5% surface-active agents, some of which are classified as irritants (Xi)
Only Tikkurila Symphony colourants are used to tint Remontti-Ässä and Joker paints. In this case, the presence of hazardous substances in tinted paint is either reduced or eliminated. When tinting paints, the amount of colourants added does not exceed 10 %. In all, 12 Symphony colourants are completely solvent-free and 4 contain small amounts of propylene glycol.

For a better lifeThe Finnish Allergy and Asthma Federation works towards a cleaner environment with the aim of improving quality of life for allergy and asthma sufferers. An important part in this effort is, together with manufacturers, to develop products that either reduce or eliminate the amount of hazardous components.
